Recently the collapse of Damar Hamlin on the field on 2nd January 2023 shocked the people and his teammates were left with emotions while he was struggling for life in the ambulance as the paramedic’s team was providing him CPR on him to save his life.
The Buffalo Bills and their opponent team Cincinnati Bengals canceled the game and The National Football League has also announced that it will not resume the matches this week. As Hamlin remained in serious condition on 3rd Jan. His condition has reminded the world of the death of Chuck Hughes who collapsed in between the game in the same way and died within an hour due to a heart attack.
Until today Chuck Hughes is the only NFL player to die on the field after collapsing. As we know 50 years ago when he collapsed his team did not stop the game but they continued to play while Hughes was fighting for his life and medics were trying to save him.

50 Years Ago What exactly happened?
On 24 October 1971 in Detroit where this match took place, Chuck Hughes who was 28 years old and was a National Football player from Detriot Lions suddenly collapsed in between the match against Chicago Bears at the end of the fourth quarter of the game. His teammates still continued playing the match even after the collapse Hughes after 62 seconds of the game the medicos arrived and they wheeled away Hughes to the hospital. Though the medical team tried to save Hughes he died only an hour after his collapse. The cause of his death was arteriosclerosis which is a heart disease most commonly known as heart attack in which the blood flow is cut off to the heart which leads to death.
The teammates of the Detriot lions retired the Jersey of Chuck Hughes which was jersey number 85 in order to pay tribute to him. To honor him, all of his 40 teammates attended Hughes’s funeral in San Antonio Texas along with Joe Schmidt who was their head coach.

About Chuck Hughes
He was born on 2 march 1943 in Robeline, Louisiana. After completing his schooling in 1961 he pursued his graduation from Northwestern State University of Louisiana on an academic scholarship. He played both footballs as well as basketball. In 1965, he completed his graduation degree in industrial arts.
He was drafted as a wide receiver by Los Angles Rams in 1967 and he played for their team until 1968 then he joined the Detroit Lions and he continued playing from Detroit until his death in 1971.
